Montauk Hoops Club: A Community Born From a Crazy Time
Share
When the world shut down in 2020, families everywhere were searching for safe, meaningful ways to keep their kids connected. In Montauk, NY that search led to something none of us expected: a small group of neighborhood families gathering on Sunday mornings with a simple goal—give our kids a chance to meet, play, and feel normal again.
It didn’t take long to realize these kids shared more than just proximity. They all loved the same things: basketball, the beach, surfing, fishing, and the easy, joyful pace of Montauk life. So we built something around those shared interests. Out of a challenging moment, Montauk Hoops Club was born.
What started as a handful of kids learning how to dribble, shoot, and pass has become a full-blown community ritual. Today, it is not uncommon for more than 20 kids show up on Sunday morning—rain or shine—to play basketball, learn the game, jump on a trampoline, and just be together.
Yes, their skills have improved. Their shots are smoother, their layups sharper, their confidence higher. But the real magic isn’t in the basketball—it’s in the friendships. Kids who barely knew each other now sprint into the driveway like they’ve known each other forever. They cheer for each other. They look out for one another. They are building bonds that feel like they’ll last a lifetime.
There’s something fitting about this happening in Montauk. This place has always been unique—idyllic, slightly wild, and deeply communal. It’s the kind of town where families spend long summer days at the beach, surf until sunset, grab dinner barefoot, and end the night listening to live music with friends who feel like family.
Montauk Hoops Club is a reflection of that spirit. It’s about basketball, sure—but it’s also about connection, community, and the kind of childhood memories that can only be made in a place as quintessentially special as Montauk.
From a pandemic pastime to a neighborhood tradition, Montauk Hoops Club has become something truly meaningful. And watching these kids grow—on the court and with each other—has been the most rewarding part of all.
